Tricks
Okay, this section comes in with a disclaimer: When we refer to "tricks", we are talking about the physical way to perform the illusion. I know some people are upset with the terms of "magic" - which, if it is confused with "real magic", I can understand - and "tricks" - because they don't like the idea of being tricked. For those of you who feel that way, I do apologize. My goal is to not offend you. So, if you can suggest a different way to label this page, I will cheerfully do so!
For those of you who wrote about all of the extra graphics included on the magic trick pages, we have now cleaned up the "past tricks" section. This will allow you to print out the instructions and pictures without wasting a lot of unnecessary ink. I hope this helps!
By the way, just a bit of gratuitous and shameless advertising, but I have an electronic book of beginners magic, filled with tons of photos and illustrations. I am selling the copies for $5.00 each, with the money being used to help provide scholarships for groups that can't afford to pay the full price for a program. If you are interested, click here.
Magic Pendulum Welcome to the closest you can come to real magic. This trick is ancient, and I do not use the word lightly. Why it works still remains a mystery, though much of it may have to do with the subconscious thoughts of the participant. (But why bother a minor miracle with the problems of psychology?) The Effect A pendulum is handed to a spectator. When you ask them a "yes or no" question, the pendulum reveals the correct answer, regardless of what they actually say!
How To Do The TrickYou will need a small pendulum. To be technical, a pendulum is simply a weight tied to the end of a piece of string. You can use a washer tied to a piece of twine or a jewel dangling from a silver chain, either one will work for our purposes.
Select a spectator and have them hold the pendulum by the end of the string. Have the person holding pendulum ask a “yes or no” question or, if you are trying for more of a show, you can ask them polite questions! If the correct answer is yes, the pendulum will swing back and forth in a straight line. If the correct answer is no, the pendulum will swing in a circle.
No matter how hard they try to hold the pendulum still or attempt to lie, the pendulum will always tell the truth. (That may not be true, of course, but it can certainly lead to some interesting situations and explanations.)
